Simpler connect/reconnect would be great

Reported by Owen | June 18th, 2010 @ 06:05 AM

Congratulations on a really nice little app. Modem connection is something that really needs to be simple and unobtrusive unlike the really clunky connection managers all the carriers seem to provide (and the latest Huawei effort seems even worse than before).

To make it even slicker, it would be nice to make the Connect menu item even more faster to access - not sure whether you could make it accessible from a keyboard shortcut (that would be best I think) or at least move it up to the top of the menu. Also an automatic reconnect on line drop would be even better.

Thanks again anyway!

PS would be prepared to pay a small amount for this if you had a shareware donation method, I'm sure others would as well.

PPS I'm using the 1.4b2 version which seems fine.

I like the 1.4 version which is s definite improvement. However the reconnect seems a bit flaky - after losing the signal, when I try to reconnect I often get the message 'error with the modem', which I can sometimes fix by pulling out and reinserting the modem. I use my 3G a lot on a train so have frequent signal drops because of tunnels etc. Anything to make the reconnect more reliable/automatic would be much appreciated!

    Hi Owen,

I too have experienced the pain of the train - (I used to particularly have issues between Datchet and Richmond when commuting in the UK. Not that this helps you at all).

Unfortunately the error message you get is usually because the modem just hasn't responded to the commands to connect, and is generated by OS X. You should get the same message if you try using the Connect button in System Preferences -> Network.

Thanks very much for the info. I typically get two different popups:

    • You were disconnected because the PPP server is not responding. If I try reconnecting this often works. It would be nice if the reconnect could be automated (maybe only after when the carrier has been detected for say 15 seconds).

    • An error occurred with the modem. As you say I get the same message if I try connecting with System Preferences. Once the modem is in this state the physical reset appears to be the only way to clear it. Is there some way to prevent/make it less likely that the modem gets in this state in the first place?

Again, thanks for a great product, I am a very heavy user!

    Regards
    Owen

From my experience (with different modems) the modems are sometimes stuck in PPP mode for some obscure reason when they are disconnected. We have on all our embedded units implemented device and hardware resets to regain control of the modem.

In the olden days a +++ ATH0 would get them back, but that does not seem to work on these modems.

You could see whether the modem after a while recovers by waiting much longer.

Small note: the 'PPP server' is actually in the modem itself, converting from 3GPP protocols to PPP.

Ah, thanks very much for the explanation. I guess I could wait to see whether it recovers but I'm always too impatient!

This little mac app provides you with signal strength, network mode (GRPS/WCDMA/HSDPA), network name control over your connection, and statistics about your current connection (current throughput, total data transferred, connection time). It does this through a little icon in your menu bar (and a bigger window, if you want to see it), and also helps you keep track of your usage - no need for a nasty surprise from your provider.
