Cheetahwatch does not detect when modem is unplugged
Reported by Charles Gamble | June 26th, 2009 @ 06:06 PM
I am using Cheetahwatch with a Huaweu E870 ExpressCard. It has the same device ID as in the code. When plugging in the device Cheetahwatch detects it and the menubar image is updated. Signal status and connecting/disconnecting all work fine. However when I disconnect and remove the modem, Cheetahwatch still shows a grey signal display (with no crossed-circle).

I'm not seeing this with the straight USB devices (I do not have an E870 to test with).
The modem being disconnected is discovered by the closing of the serial devices the driver presents to the computer. It may, occasionally, take longer than others for the USB driver to notice the device disconnecting and to clear up the /dev/ "files".
If you're able to contribute alternative code that uses IOKit I'd be happy to include that in a future release.

This little mac app provides you with signal strength, network mode (GRPS/WCDMA/HSDPA), network name control over your connection, and statistics about your current connection (current throughput, total data transferred, connection time). It does this through a little icon in your menu bar (and a bigger window, if you want to see it), and also helps you keep track of your usage - no need for a nasty surprise from your provider.
